This part-time position is responsible for overall management and administration of the Muhlenberg Township Fire and Rescue. The ideal candidate will provide direction in improving overall fire service delivery to the Township through the development of a strategic plan, policy implementation, and guidance to elected officials and Township Management. The Fire Chief reports to the Township Manager governed by a 5-member Board of Commissioners. The Fire Chief is a visible position within the Township and is responsible for the general oversight of all of the Township’s day to day fire operations. Muhlenberg Township has a 0.6 mill Fire Fund Tax that generates $678,000.00 to fund the combination department consisting of part time paid drivers and volunteers. Muhlenberg Township is currently merging two fire departments and the Chief will facilitate the merger process.
Past experience should include a high level of successful performance and thorough knowledge of fire suppression/prevention theories, principles, techniques, and equipment, including national, state, and local fire codes and standards, hazardous materials recognition, identification, mitigation, record keeping/reporting, rescue techniques, standards, best practices, and planning/policy research. Considerable ability to develop a long-term strategic plan, to make decisions under pressure or crisis conditions, to take command of emergency incidents that may involve life, property, or the operations of the fire department. In addition, demonstrated/verifiable experience utilizing sound and effective leadership techniques to establish goals and achieve results within financial and other resource limits, a proven record of leading with high personal integrity, ethical behavior and incident command are important considerations. Must establish and maintain working relationships with superiors, associates, subordinates, volunteer fire companies, officials of other agencies, and the general public.

The ideal candidate will have a combination of the qualifications listed below and/or equivalent work experience.
• A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college/university in public administration, business management, fire science, or related field.
• Ten (10) years of experience in a career or combination fire department, including 5 years in a command/supervisory role, 3 years of experience in managing fire department programs involving paid and volunteer personnel, or an equivalent combination of education and qualifying experience.
• Certification through the PA State Fire Academy-or-IFSAC-or-Pro-Board in Firefighter II (NFPA 1001), Fire Officer II (NFPA 1021), Hazardous Materials Operations (NFPA 472), NIMS 300, 400. Preference will be given to an Incident Safety Officer, and certification (NFPA or ICC) in fire and building inspection.
• Possession of and the ability to maintain a valid PA Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), minimum Class B with Air Brake Endorsement and PA Emergency Medical Technician certification.
